Motorcycle Toolbox Ammo Can Hack (Mosko Moto + Outback Motortek)

Want an inexpensive motorcycle toolbox that you always goes with you? This DIY Ammo Can hack makes uses Outback Motortek pannier racks and the Mosko Moto Backcountry Pannier kit to do just that. (and probably works on other pannier racks/kits as well) Once you’ve got the right parts it should only take 20 minutes to install.

What you’ll need

Here is what you’ll need to make your own simple motorcycle tool box:

• Outback Motortek Pannier Racks (standard version, or similar) – I’ve linked to the Tenere 700 version, but my hunch is this should work for many bikes. I tested on my wifes KTM790 Adventure and it worked perfectly as well
• Mosko Moto Backcountry Pannier Kit (or similar) – I am using the 35L panniers, but I bet the 24L panniers will work as well.
• Small Ammo Can – I got this one from Amazon:HARDROCK 30 Cal Ammo Can Metal 9mm Ammo Box
• Mosko Moto / Voile Straps – 20″ length (or similar) – Simalarly, any voile strap will do (in the 20″ or so length) – but these from Mosko Moto are nice and wide and seem tougher than the thinner Voile straps. Confidence inspiring!

In the video I show how I did this tool kit hack on my own motorcycle, the Yamaha Tenere 700, but I also checked the fit on my wife’s motorcycle, the KTM 790 adventure and it worked perfectly there as well. The key seems to be the Outback Motortek pannier rack and Mosko Moto Backcountry Pannier Kit (or at least the wedges and pucks (backing plate and attachment brackets) cause this is what makes it work so well. Other brands of motorcycle racks and motorcycle luggage might work, but it’s hard to argue with how well this goes together. I was really surprised with not only how well this worked but also how easy it was to install. The fit is like it was made for it and the straps hold the ammo can very securely in place.

Ammo Can Considerations

The key to the ammo can is the size. This works so well because the ammo can is just the perfect size to fit between the pucks (brackets attaching the mosko moto pannier mounting wedge) and the wedge, inside the frame of the rack. The listed dimensions for the HARDROCK 30 Cal Ammo Can Metal 9mm Ammo Box is 10.8″ x 3.7″ x 6.9″. The 10.8″ long and 6.9″ tall dimensions are the cirtical ones cause that’s what makes it fit. As you can see, you could go a little bit longer than 10.8″, but not much, before interfering with the rack. And 6.9″ is the perfect height, any taller and it wouldn’t fit between the pucks. And any shorter and it would be prone to bouncing around on bumpy roads.

If you’ve already got the racks and luggage, the cost is less than $50! (about $20 for the straps and $20 for the ammo can). In the past, I have gone the tool tube route, using a PVC or ABS tube. You can actually see the last one of these I built in this youtube video on my Africa Twin. But new bike, new tool kit. And I like the space and ease of access for this ammo can tool box a bit better than the tool tube, which made it hard to reach things that fell to the very bottom.

I’ve had this setup in place for a few hundred miles and I have no complaints. It works just as I had hoped – providing trouble free access to my critical tools in an unobtrusive way. There is not a lot of unneccessary noise or vibration coming from the kit – in fact, I dont even know it’s there. And it appears to be very secure in that spot, the voile streps really do a good job of locking it into position. I have been on and off pavement with it (and some very light trail riding) and haven’t noticed any issues with it moving around or bouncing out of position.
