When spring finally rolled around and it was time for that first ride, the plan was simple—turn the key, hit the throttle, and go find some dirt.

Instead, I got… nothing.

No dash lights, no whirring noises, no signs of life. The charger didn’t help either. Instead of settling into a normal charging cycle, it just flashed that red/green fault combo that usually means low voltage or some kind of unhappy battery situation.

If you’ve landed here because your Ultra Bee (or any similar high-voltage e-moto) is acting dead after sitting for a while, you’re not alone. In this post, I’ll walk through what happened with my bike, how I diagnosed the problem, and the process I used to slowly bring the battery back from an over-discharged state using a benchtop power supply and some patience.

When “Dead” Doesn’t Mean Done

The first step was figuring out whether the battery was truly toast or just too low for the BMS to wake up and the stock charger to recognize. A quick check with a multimeter showed the pack sitting in the mid-30 volt range—way below where it should be for a 72 V system, but not zero.

There was some chatter on the internet about being able to wake up the BMS and recovery the Sur-ron battery from a low voltage state by plugging and unplugging the charger rapidly a few times, as described in this video. That did seem very promising. It also didn’t work for me, despite several attempts.

Rather than immediately pricing out a new battery (ok… maybe I did at least think about the dream Sur-ron upgrades I could do if investing in a whole new power system), I started digging around for ways to “wake up” the pack. Other riders had some success with low-current, direct charging approaches: Reddit recommended a Gritshift 2a 60v charger or with controlled bench supplies wired directly to the battery terminals – bypassing the Battery Management System (BMS) charge controller. Since I already had a variable 120 V / 3 A benchtop power supply in the shop, that became the heart of the experiment.

Opening the Pack and Finding the Right Terminals

WARNING: THIS IS DANGEROUS. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

This is the part where the usual disclaimer applies: if you’re not comfortable working around high-voltage batteries, exposed terminals, and basic electronics, this is not the project to learn on. For those who are, careful prep makes a big difference.

I started by confirming the voltage at the main output terminals and labeling positive and negative so there was no guessing later. The plan was simple: use the existing external positive terminal on the pack, and use the B- lug inside as the negative connection point for the benchtop supply.

A second round of multimeter checks between those two points confirmed what I’d already seen: voltage in the high 30s, but definitely not where it needed to be. The idea here isn’t to slam a bunch of current into the battery; it’s to gently nudge it back into a range where the BMS will wake up and the factory charger will take over. I dialed the current limit down to around 2 amps, set the output voltage in the mid-50s to start, and made sure the supply was turned off before clipping anything in place.

Positive lead to the marked external positive terminal.
