Installing and Removing Plastic Fairing Clips (Pop Rivets, Push Pins, Plastic Pins, etc.)

These small plastic rivets (or pins or clips) are used on a lot of motorcycle fairings (including the Kawasaki Versys X-300, Suzuki V-Strom, and Honda Africa Twin) and other plastic parts around the garage. As a quick reference, here’s what they look like, how they work, and how to install and remove them.

Installation and removal of these clips is really quite simple and just depends on the position of the central pin, relative to the outer rivet.

When the central pin is flush with the rivet head, the clip is installed correctly and holds the plastic pieces together. In this position, the ribs of the rivet flare out.

When the central pin is pressed in (relative to the rivet head) the clip can easily be removed. The central pin can be pushed in (popped) by pressing on it with a small flat or phillips head screw driver. Applying a little bit of pressure to the pin head will ‘pop’ the pin forward.

Lastly, to reinstall the clip, the pin must be ‘reset’ in the rivet head. With the central pin partially pulled out, the rivet can be reinstalled in the hole. Once positioned correctly, simply push the pin into the ‘installed’ position and you are good to go.
